Zmiter Dashkevich said what Belarusians need to do now for the country to become free and independent
“This would be enough to prevent an occupation administration from ruling over us.”

In a new episode of the "TOK" project, former political prisoner and leader of "Young Front" Zmiter Dashkevich emphasized: the events of 2020 became the moment of birth of the Belarusian nation, but now it must mature and develop. According to Dashkevich, this growth is impossible without a deep understanding of the past and, first and foremost, an understanding of the exceptional significance of the Belarusian language.
“Do not abandon our language, lest you die,” Dashkevich quotes Francišak Bahuševič and regretfully notes that the process of transitioning to the native language, even among Belarusians in exile, is proceeding very slowly.
The former political prisoner gives an example of his acquaintance who moved to Ukraine after 2020:
“They went to Ukraine, calmly enrolled their children in a Ukrainian school, they study there calmly, they understand everything. But many, many Belarusians insisted on going to Russian schools and studying in Russian. And no matter how much Putin proves to them that where there is Russian language, there is Russian world, they do not understand this. And yet many of them want to govern Belarus.”
In the former political prisoner’s opinion, if Belarusians spoke their own language, it “would be more than enough for self-preservation.”
“This would be enough for Belarus to become free and independent. Enough to prevent an occupation administration from ruling over us, because of which people are now suffering in exile, and because of which many in Belarus are sitting and waiting – will they come or not come?”
When asked by Nasta Rovda if the Lukashenka regime would be able to stay in power if Belarusians were linguistically independent, Zmiter answered categorically:
“It is absolutely impossible. The majority, the absolute majority of representatives of the security forces whom I saw in offices — these are adherents of the Russian world. In the overwhelming majority of cases, there is a Russian flag in the office: among prison officials, among police officials, among HUBaziK punitive officers. (…)
For them, Belarus is something alien. They have the Union State in their minds, and Moscow. And we, well, we continue to say this: I love Belarus and the Belarusian language, but I will speak Russian.”
