Belarusian Foreign Ministry "does not yet see the Lithuanian side's readiness for a serious conversation"

Lithuanian Prime Minister Inga Ruginienė stated that a responsible representative has already been appointed for a possible meeting with representatives of Belarus. Press Secretary of the Belarusian Foreign Ministry Ruslan Varankou commented on this statement.

According to Varankou, Belarus does not yet see the Lithuanian side's readiness for a serious conversation.

«We have reviewed reports that the Lithuanian side has decided on a candidate for possible interaction. However, as of today, we have no concrete and official information either about who will represent Vilnius, or about what powers this person is endowed with, or about what content is intended to be put into such a dialogue. Apparently, this decision is addressed primarily to the internal audience — to show the Lithuanian population that something is being done in the Belarusian direction,» Ruslan Varankou said.

He added that the Belarusian side does not yet see concrete steps that would allow for speaking about the Lithuanian side's readiness for a serious conversation.

«At the same time, our position remains unchanged: we have always advocated for dialogue and remain open to it. But we count not on media gestures, but on concrete and meaningful steps,» the Foreign Ministry Press Secretary stated.

Yesterday, Lithuanian Prime Minister Ruginienė stated that a person has already been appointed for negotiations with Belarus. But Lithuania has conditions. Among the main requirements are: stopping cross-border flights of balloons used for smuggling, the return of detained trucks without additional payments, and preventing illegal migration.

Ruginienė noted that without fulfilling these conditions, there would be no progress, and Lithuania does not see sufficient readiness for cooperation from Minsk.
