It is asserted that in the coming days, US naval forces may begin boarding Iranian vessels in international waters and effectively seizing them. The goal of these actions is to intensify economic pressure on Iran and force it to make concessions on issues related to the Strait of Hormuz and its nuclear program.
Not only vessels sailing under the Iranian flag may be subject to restrictions, but also those that, according to the US, assist Iran — including the so-called "shadow fleet" used for oil transportation.
It is reported that since the beginning of the blockade, US forces have already stopped more than two dozen merchant vessels, forcing them to turn back. However, they have not yet carried out any boardings.
The situation in the region remains tense. Iran initially announced the opening of the Strait of Hormuz for navigation, but quickly reinstated military control over it, accusing the US of aggressive actions.
As a result, a de facto dual blockade has formed in the strait — by both the US and Iran, which creates a risk of further escalation and affects international maritime transport.
