The Palestinian group Hamas confirmed that on May 15, the leader of its armed wing, Iz ad-Din al-Hadad, was killed in the Gaza Strip as a result of an Israeli strike. Israeli authorities had called him one of the main organizers of the October 7, 2023 attacks, writes the BBC.

Reportedly, the strike hit a residential complex in the center of Gaza City. Witnesses claim that several missiles were launched simultaneously from different directions. After this, a strong fire broke out in the building, and rescuers had difficulty reaching the injured and evacuating them.
The initial strike resulted in dead and wounded. Al-Hadad reportedly sustained serious injuries, after which he was carried out of the building, and attempts were made to transport him by car. However, this vehicle was later also fired upon, resulting in the deaths of the people inside.
Israeli authorities stated that they consider the operation successful and accused Al-Hadad of numerous attacks, killings, and kidnappings. They also stressed that they would continue actions against those who participated in the events of October 7, 2023.
Against this backdrop, the situation surrounding the ceasefire in Gaza remains tense. Hamas accuses Israel of violating agreements and striking civilians. Israel, in turn, asserts its right to strike members of the group and demands its disarmament.
Peace negotiations have effectively reached a deadlock. Plans for establishing a temporary civilian administration and rebuilding the region have not yet been implemented, and tension in the region remains high.
