Dmitry Peskov, the press secretary of the President of the Russian Federation, stated that Russian director Andrey Zvyagintsev has no right to call for an end to Russia's war with Ukraine. This was the Kremlin's reaction to the director's speech at the Cannes Film Festival on May 23, where he received the Grand Prix for his new film "Minotaur".
From the stage, Zvyagintsev addressed Vladimir Putin with the appeal: "End this slaughter already. The whole world is waiting for it."
At a briefing on May 25, Peskov noted that he personally would not convey these words to Putin, and expressed doubt that anyone else would.
The Kremlin's representative explained his position thus: "Zvyagintsev never condemned the bloody slaughter committed by the Kyiv regime in Donbas. Starting in 2014, when the war began. If he had done that then, he would probably have had the right to speak. But now he doesn't have that right."
Peskov also added that the Kremlin has not watched the film "Minotaur."
Film critic Anton Dolin called "Minotaur," which won the Grand Prix in Cannes, the first feature film dedicated to Russia in the era of the "special military operation."
