The Office of the President of Lithuania supports the initiative of Vilnius Mayor Valdas Benkunskas to collect signatures for strengthening migration policy, said the country's chief advisor Deividas Matulionis, writes Delfi.lt.
“As you have noticed, we also adhere to a stricter migration policy. This proposal looks good because indeed, those people who live here and want to integrate should learn the Lithuanian language,” Matulionis said in an interview with Žinių radijas.
“But that's just one side of the coin. In fact, we need to think about other, more flexible migration options so that we can meet business needs, but at the same time not create internal tensions in society,” he added.
The head of state's advisor notes that globalization is already causing certain irritation in other European countries as well.
“Perhaps we do not fully realize that multiculturalism and globalism in Europe are already causing certain irritation. And, in essence, certain far-right forces are gaining strength precisely by opposing these ideas. Therefore, sooner or later, we will probably have to realize that limiting and regulating migration is a very important area that we cannot ignore,” he emphasized.
In early May, Valdas Benkunskas organized a campaign opposite the Ministry of Internal Affairs to collect signatures for strengthening migration conditions. He then stated that over the past month he had tried to reach out to Minister Vladislav Kondratovich with a request to discuss a review of migration policy, but, according to him, received no response.
A little earlier, the Minister of Internal Affairs also received an official appeal from Benkunskas with a proposal to submit to the Seimas of Lithuania the amendments to the law prepared by him, which would provide for the extension of a temporary residence permit in Lithuania after three years only for those foreigners who have at least an A2 level of proficiency in the state language and have a document confirming this.
