Franak Viačorka revealed that he managed to vote in the CC elections only on the seventh to tenth attempt
2113 people participated in the elections to the IV convocation of the Coordination Council — three times fewer than last time. "Belsat" asked Franak Viačorka, Tsikhanouskaya's chief advisor, how he assesses the voting results and for whom he himself voted in the elections.
According to Franak Viačorka, "it's good that they were held, there is continuity." He notes that many new people joined the composition, and as many as eight lists passed.
«It's bad that few people voted, it's a very unfavorable time. Against the backdrop of repression and general fatigue, could it have been otherwise? I think it's predictable,» he says.
Tsikhanouskaya's chief advisor was asked for whom he voted in the elections, but he did not admit:
«I won't say for whom, but it worked out on the seventh to tenth attempt. Probably only the most persistent reached the end. If the goal was to boost turnout, the organizers could have made everything much simpler, but here it's clear — the emphasis was placed on quality and security.»
To those who believe that the low turnout for the elections to the Coordination Council is a failure of democratic forces or Tsikhanouskaya, who supported them, Viačorka responds:
«The Coordination Council is still an independent institution, and the Office, or even more so Tsikhanouskaya, has no direct involvement in its organization. But our task is to support the democratic process; we support elections and all institutions, this all makes us stronger. One for all and all for one, as they say.»
What to do now with the Coordination Council and whether reforms are needed — the advisor says that the Council itself will decide.
«We congratulate everyone who joined the composition. I am truly glad that such a wide range of views, different groups, will be represented. I agree that reform is needed, because people don't understand the functionality, they don't understand "why." There needs to be more involvement of civil society, a better secretariat. And somehow revive the work: because in recent years of cooperation, it seemed to me that the CC was too slow, many initiatives were discussed for months, but action needs to be taken quickly,» he explained.
