Cuba experienced another large-scale power outage on July 6. The state energy company reported a complete shutdown of the national power grid, according to the Associated Press.
Cuban authorities stated that they have already begun efforts to restore power supply, and the causes of the accident are being investigated.
The energy crisis in the country is exacerbated by a fuel shortage. Cuba only independently meets about 40% of its needs, and oil reserves delivered in late March were depleted as early as May. At that time, authorities admitted that state fuel reserves had virtually run out.
In recent months, residents of Cuba have repeatedly faced large-scale power outages. In addition to emergency blackouts, planned power cuts are regularly carried out in the country, which can last up to 24 hours in some regions.
Amid the crisis, Cuban authorities have initiated economic reforms, including expanding the role of the private sector, and proposed nearly 200 market changes in hopes of achieving a softening of American restrictions. However, negotiations with the US have not yet yielded results.
According to Western media reports, President Donald Trump's administration continues to intensify pressure on Havana, counting on political changes in the country.
