A dacha owner from near Gomel sued a neighbor for keeping roosters. And even calculated how often they crow
In 2025, an unusual conflict erupted in the Gomel region between neighbors in a horticultural society. A 55-year-old owner of two plots filed a lawsuit demanding that his neighbor be prohibited from keeping roosters, as their loud crowing, he claimed, prevented him and his family from resting, reports "Grodno Pravda".

The neighbor, a 75-year-old pensioner, kept 20 chickens and two roosters on his plot. The plaintiff had no complaints about the chickens, but the roosters, according to him, were too loud. The man even calculated that on one of the days, from 12 PM to 4 PM, the birds crowed 108 times.
Initially, the plaintiff's mother contacted the police, but during the inspection, no violations were found, and they advised resolving the issue through court. In his statement, the man referred to the rules for horticultural societies, according to which animals can be kept on a plot if they do not disturb the neighbors' rest. Keeping birds also requires written consent from the owners of adjacent plots.
However, during the consideration, it turned out that the men's plots do not even directly border each other. Between them is a three-meter drainage ditch. The defendant's poultry house was located 21 meters from the ditch, and from the ditch to the plaintiff's fence was another 25 meters. Thus, there were about 49 meters between the plots. In addition, the bird owner had obtained the necessary written consent from the owners of the truly adjacent plots.
The pensioner explained that he lives almost all year round at his dacha with his wife, and homemade eggs are necessary for him due to his health condition. Roosters are needed to maintain the chicken population.
The case never reached a substantive review of the dispute. By the time of the court hearing, there were no roosters on the defendant's plot, so the plaintiff's representative withdrew the lawsuit and the demand for compensation of court costs. The pensioner did not object to the termination of the case.
