The ball Maradona scored the 'Hand of God' goal with at the World Cup sold for $3.3 million
The football that Diego Maradona used to score the famous "Hand of God" goal in the 1986 World Cup quarter-final has been sold at auction for $3.3 million, writes the BBC.
In that World Cup match between Argentina and England, Maradona, in the 51st minute, used his hand to push the ball into Peter Shilton's goal. Argentina won 2:1. After the game, Maradona stated that the goal was scored "a little with Maradona's head and a little with the hand of God."
In the same match, the footballer scored another legendary goal — the so-called "Goal of the Century." He dribbled past five English outfield players and sent the ball into Shilton's net.
The ball was sold for $3.3 million at the Heritage Auctions in the USA. However, the organizers had expected it could be acquired for approximately $10 million.
The Adidas Azteca ball was taken by Tunisian referee Ali Bin Nasser, who officiated that game, after the match. He kept it for over 30 years. In 2023, Bin Nasser signed a document confirming it was the only ball used in the match. Its authenticity was also confirmed by independent experts.
In 2022, Bin Nasser had already sold this ball for $2.37 million. The new owner put it up for auction in 2023, but the required minimum price was not reached at that time.
Maradona's jersey, which he wore in that same match against England, was sold in 2022 for approximately $9.7 million.
