In Bali, a Swiss tourist disregarded local traditions. He will spend the next year in prison

A court on the Indonesian island of Bali sentenced 26-year-old Swiss citizen Luzian Andrin Tgörgen to one year in prison for offensive publications about the holy day for local Hindus – the Day of Silence, known as Nyepi, reports Associated Press .

The court in Denpasar found the man guilty of violating Indonesia's new Criminal Code. According to the investigation, the tourist posted videos and messages on social media about how he violated restrictions during Nyepi, even though villa staff had warned him about the rules in advance.

During Nyepi, residents and guests of Bali must remain in their homes or accommodations, observe silence, and engage in meditation. On this day, streets and beaches are closed, the airport ceases operations, and internet access is restricted. The rules apply to everyone regardless of religion or citizenship.

In his publications, Tgörgen boasted that he did not adhere to the prohibitions and went to the beach. In one of the videos, he called the local tradition "crazy" and used an expletive.

The publications widely circulated on social media and provoked outrage among local residents. Following complaints, the police found the tourist at a villa in the popular tourist area of Legian and arrested him.

During the trial, which began in June, the Swiss man stated that he had no intention of offending the Hindu holiday or the residents of Bali. According to him, he was hungry and frustrated that he could not buy food due to the restrictions, and also did not fully understand the extent of the prohibitions. The man apologized and stated that he regretted his actions.

The judge noted that the accused's actions offended the residents of Bali, hurt their religious feelings, and caused public outrage.

Previously, foreign and local tourists had been detained for going out during Nyepi, but such cases usually did not result in criminal prosecution.
