Merz announced the end of the "era of unconditional transatlantic friendship"

German Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz stated on September 17 that the era of "unconditional transatlantic friendship" between the US and Europe, which formed after World War II, has likely ended for the foreseeable future, writes Bloomberg.

Speaking to members of his party in Berlin, Merz noted that political views and attitudes towards the transatlantic alliance are changing in the United States. According to him, European countries could not have foreseen such changes previously.

"This era of unconditional transatlantic friendship has probably ended for the foreseeable future," Friedrich Merz stated.

The German Chancellor's statement comes amidst renewed tension in relations between Washington and Brussels. US President Donald Trump reacted to the proposal to make Canada an associate member of the European Union with threats to impose new tariffs against European countries if he considers such cooperation harmful to America. He also allowed for the cessation of trade with Europe in certain areas.

Later, Trump claimed that the US allegedly "carries" European countries with whom it has a $200 billion trade deficit. He argued that Washington could simply refuse to trade with Europe.

Trump had previously made threats towards the European Union. These included plans to impose 50 percent tariffs on European goods, restrict EU access to the American arms market, and reduce the number of American military personnel in Europe.

Bloomberg notes that Merz's words echo a statement made by former German Chancellor Angela Merkel in May 2017. At that time, during Trump's first presidential term, she said that the reliable relations built after World War II were "to some extent lost."
