From 49 kopecks to 2 rubles — how much does a kilogram of potatoes cost in Minsk today?
Not long ago, a kilogram of potatoes in a store cost more than a ruble. Now, the number 0 often appears at the beginning of price tags. "Minskaya Prauda" looked at how much potatoes cost today in Minsk's markets and stores, and where they can be bought especially cheaply.
49 kopecks per kilogram
The most budget-friendly offer in the city was found in a store near the "Rakovsky Kirmash" market. Here, a kilogram of potatoes is sold for only 49 kopecks. True, there is a modest clarification on the price tag: "Discounted," but the vegetables themselves look quite decent: the tubers are firm, although small.
However, the modest size may well turn out to be an advantage. Such potatoes are perfect for baking whole or preparing other dishes where small tubers look especially appetizing. And for a couple of kilograms, you'll have to pay less than a ruble.
Prices hold steady at the market
At the Minsk markets, the situation is more familiar. For large, selected potatoes from their own harvest, sellers ask from 1.20 to 2.20 rubles per kilogram. Here, the buyer pays not only for the vegetables but also for the opportunity to get large tubers with a decent appearance.
There is also a price benchmark for "Tasty" potatoes near the "Pralecharskaya" metro station. Here, they ask 2 rubles per kilogram, but the potatoes are already pre-packaged, so the buyer only needs to take a ready-made package. It's not possible to select individual tubers and assess their condition before purchase. The convenience of pre-packaging comes at the cost of lacking choice.
Those who stock up in advance should pay attention to wholesale offers. At the "Tabary" market, potatoes can be found for 70-80 kopecks per kilogram, but this price is valid when buying from one large sack. So, for family provisions, the market still remains one of the options for saving money.
A good deal near home
Today, you don't necessarily have to go to the market for a good deal. Supermarkets have also joined the battle for customers and offer potatoes at quite attractive prices.
On average, a kilogram of large potatoes in chain stores can be found at a price starting from 75 kopecks.
