China Aims to Become a World Leader in Neural Interfaces
China intends to become a global leader in the development of neural interfaces — technologies that allow the human brain to directly interact with computers, prosthetics, and other electronic devices. As The Economist writes , neural interfaces are becoming a new frontier in technological rivalry between China and the US.

Beijing has included neurotechnologies among the priority industries for the new five-year plan for 2026–2030. Other priorities include quantum computing, humanoid robotics, and thermonuclear energy.
In China, hundreds of startups and thousands of suppliers are already working on the development and production of neural interfaces.
NeuroXess is one of China's leading companies in fully wireless brain implants. It has already conducted clinical trials.
StairMed develops neural implants and receives support from the technology giant Alibaba. The company NeuCyber is involved in implanted neural interfaces with state support. BrainCo produces non-invasive devices and bionic prosthetics that can be controlled using electrical signals read from the body.
Simultaneously, the market for non-invasive neurotechnologies is developing. About 20 Chinese companies already sell wearable devices — from sleep monitoring systems to gaming interfaces that use the brain's electrical activity.
China is forming an entire state ecosystem for the development of this industry, which includes funding, regulation, medical infrastructure, and specialist training.
For example, in autumn 2026, Tianjin University will begin teaching the first students in a dedicated bachelor's program focused on neural interfaces.
China aims to apply the same approach to neurotechnologies that it previously used in the fields of electric vehicles, batteries, and robotics: to transform a promising scientific direction into a large-scale industrial sector.
While Elon Musk's American company Neuralink has become a symbol of technological breakthrough in this area, China is betting on creating an entire industry capable of mass-producing similar devices for the global market.
