A stunning and sinister painting by Frida Kahlo has been sold for a record price for a female artist.
A self-portrait by Mexican artist Frida Kahlo has been sold at Sotheby's auction in New York for $54.7 million.

This became a record price for a work by a female artist, The Guardian writes.
The auction lasted 4 minutes, the buyer's name is not disclosed.
The painting titled El sueño (La cama), or "The Dream" ("The Bed"), was painted in 1940. In it, Frida Kahlo depicts herself sleeping in a bed. On the canopy above her is a grinning skeleton wrapped in dynamite.
Interestingly, Frida Kahlo's works located in museums and private collections in Mexico are considered monuments of art and are prohibited from being sold. The work put up for auction was in a private collection, the owner's name of which is not disclosed.
Previously, the most expensive painting by a female artist sold at auction was the work of American Georgia O'Keeffe, "Jimson Weed / White Flower No. 1." It was bought in 2014 for $44.4 million.
Recently, Gustav Klimt's painting "Portrait of Elisabeth Lederer" was sold for a record amount — 236 million dollars.
