The former head of Belgazprombank and presidential candidate in the 2020 elections was detained on July 6, 2020. He was sentenced to 14 years in a penal colony.

Viktor Babariko is on the list of pardoned individuals who are being released on December 13.
Blogger and former political prisoner Ihar Losik recounted that before correspondence was restricted, Babariko received up to 300 letters a day.
The former banker was serving his sentence in penal colony No. 1 in Navapolatsk. He was convicted in July 2021. Babariko was found guilty of receiving a bribe on an especially large scale (Part 3 of Article 430 of the Criminal Code) and of legalizing funds obtained through criminal means (Part 2 of Article 235 of the Criminal Code). He was given 14 years under strict regime conditions.
In addition, the political prisoner was punished with a fine of 145,000 rubles (five thousand basic units), and he will also have to pay more than 46 million rubles to compensate for the allegedly caused damage. Viktor was also deprived of the right to hold leadership positions for a certain period. Viktor Babariko did not admit guilt.
In April 2023, it became known that Babariko was hospitalized in a Navapolatsk hospital with signs of beating and pneumothorax. In July of the same year, the colony administration informed Babariko's relatives that he was in a cell-type room, and his health was "not threatened."
Since February 2023, Viktor Babariko has been held incommunicado (informational blockade), which the human rights community considers a serious violation of human rights.
In January 2025, Babariko was visited by blogger Roman Protasevich. He published a photo of Babariko and his video address to his relatives. In detention, Babariko lost a lot of weight.
