U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth joked about the Venezuelan military's lack of attempts to repel a U.S. air raid during an American military operation that ended with the capture of Nicolás Maduro.

Speaking to service members at a shipyard in Virginia on Monday, January 5, Hegseth boasted that the Americans managed to enter Caracas without casualties, Deutsche Welle writes.
“Three nights ago in Venezuela, almost 200 of our best Americans entered the center of Caracas…” Hegseth emphasized, noting that the operation went without the death of a single U.S. service member.
“Apparently, those very Russian air defense systems didn’t work too well, did they?” he joked.
During the same speech, Pete Hegseth stated that the U.S. does not seek conflicts with other countries, but the world has entered a “new era of superpower competition.” In this context, the American Secretary of Defense directly mentioned only China. According to Hegseth, the U.S. will “rise to meet this challenge” and will implement technologies in the defense sector “that will be needed to dominate future combat operations.”
