Maia Sandu spoke in favor of Moldova's unification with Romania
Moldovan President Maia Sandu stated that if a referendum on the unification of Moldova with Romania were held, she would personally support such an idea. She spoke about this in a podcast for British journalists, writes "European Truth".

According to Sandu, in the late 1980s, when the national revival movement was actively developing in the region, the topic of reunification with Romania was widely discussed in her homeland. Moldova had a historical connection with Romania and was part of the Romanian state until 1940, when it was annexed by Stalin's USSR. However, since a referendum was not held at the turn of the 1980s-1990s, it is not precisely known how many people would have supported such a decision at that time.
Answering a direct question about her current position, Sandu emphasized that she herself would vote "for" unification. She explained this by the complex geopolitical situation around Moldova and in the world in general, noting that it is increasingly difficult for a small country to remain democratic and fully sovereign.
At the same time, the President of Moldova admits that currently there is no majority in Moldovan society that would support the idea of reunification with Romania. Instead, according to her, the majority of citizens advocate for joining the European Union, and it is on this path that the authorities are focusing their efforts, as it is a more realistic goal for preserving the country's sovereignty.
After recent elections in Moldova, Romanian ultranationalist forces once again called for the unification of the two countries. A survey by the Bucharest sociological company Avangarde showed that almost half of Romania's residents support such an idea.
