Viktor Goncharenko tasked with leading the Belarus national football team to a major tournament
Since 1992, the Belarus national team has never qualified for World or European Championships, not even playing in play-off matches.

Andrei Vasilevich, First Deputy Chairman of the Belarusian Football Federation Association, announced the main task for Viktor Goncharenko and the Belarus national team he leads.
«Among the immediate tasks is qualifying for a major tournament. The closest one is the European Championship. In principle, getting there, considering the current qualification format, is entirely realistic [the tournament involves 24 teams out of 53 European ones — Nasha Niva]. More global and specific tasks will be set and discussed in February when the Nations League draw takes place. Then we will build a strategy for the upcoming autumn and for the entire year 2027, when the EURO qualifiers will be held,» Vasilevich noted.
Viktor Goncharenko took charge of the Belarus national team on January 6. The specialist's contract with ABFF is valid until the end of 2029.

The next edition of the UEFA Nations League will take place in autumn 2026. The Belarus national team plays in Division C (the third tier), a win in which can secure a spot in the Euro 2028 play-offs. The Nations League draw will take place on February 12, 2026.
The qualifying matches for the 2028 European Championship will take place in the following year, 2027.
The previous coach of the Belarus national team, Carlos Alós, was tasked with finishing second in their 2026 World Cup qualifying group with Scotland, Denmark, and Greece, which would have earned a play-off spot. Belarus finished in last, fourth place, without a single win, drawing twice and losing four times.
