Markau was again asked if the Ministry of Information plans to expand the Belarusian language on television
«Only a little more than 1% of the population prefers content in Belarusian.

Why did the Minister of Information answer negatively to the question about increasing the amount of content in Belarusian? If the Ministry of Information currently sees no reason for a sharp increase in content in Belarusian, perhaps it's worth reviewing approaches and setting a trend through the media, rather than following it? These questions were posed to Marat Markau by STB correspondent Alena Syrava in Russian.
Markau mentioned that he was offered to launch immediately 45% of programs on television in Belarusian.
«But that definitely cannot be done. Because it is not justified by anything today,» he assures.
«Why not 20%, why not 15%, why not the proportions that exist in Belarus today? 25% (according to the census) speak Belarusian. From the Ministry's perspective, this should be approached calmly, progressively, and without causing language questions or language problems. Because as a state body, we have no right to harm or create critical situations,» he says.
He says that there are two absolutely diametrically opposed groups.
«Some say that the Belarusian language is being demeaned in the country, while others shout that the Russian language is being demeaned. Both groups do not work for the benefit of the state. And both are very close to being accused of displaying extremist ideas. Because they are trying to sow discord in our society. Both must be fought against,» he says.
Markau assures that today only a little more than one percent want to watch programs in Belarusian. Another about 30% «calmly perceive any language content», and the rest want to watch in Russian.
«This is the starting point for today,» Markau concludes.
He says that the ministry has the opportunity to stimulate projects in Belarusian.
«We will pursue this line calmly, without overstraining,» Markau promises.
He suggests conducting another survey in a couple of years and seeing how the situation has changed. «This is a complex issue if we truly want to stimulate interest in the wider use of the Belarusian language,» Markau said, without uttering a single word in Belarusian.
