A pair of brown bears in the Minsk Zoo woke up and are leading an active life
This year, the bears slept well.

A pair of brown bears — Tristan and Nyura — woke up in the Minsk Zoo. This was reported by Tatyana Soltysava, a junior research fellow at the zoo, to BelTA.
Tatyana Soltysava reminded that hibernation in bears is a natural and necessary physiological process regulated by weather conditions. With the first significant warming, the bears at the Minsk Zoo woke up, and this happened approximately in mid-February.
She said that this year the bears slept well. “Our adult bear Tristan went into hibernation even before the New Year. The young female bear Nyura, who usually ignores this process, did go to sleep this year thanks to the severe frosts and snowfalls, but only in early January, after the New Year,” noted Tatyana Soltysava.

The junior research fellow explained that emerging from hibernation is a gradual process for bears.
“First, the bear becomes more active and starts to move around, but does not leave its den. If the cold returns, it might even go back to sleep. Therefore, there is a sign: if a bear has left its den, severe frosts are no longer to be expected. This is what happened in our case: when our employees saw that the bears started to emerge from their den, it became clear that no more severe frosts were anticipated,” she noted.
Tatyana Soltysava added that after hibernation, the bears had lost significant weight and now needed to gradually return to their normal life and diet. A bear's usual diet consists of about 18 kilograms of food, but after hibernation, it's only about one kilogram. In the first few days, they are given protein-rich food: many nuts, cooked meat and fish, as well as fruits and vegetables. “Gradually, the diet increases, and the bears become more and more active,” she added.
Soltysava emphasized that today Tristan and Nyura are already leading active lives, and zoo visitors can observe them in their enclosures.
