Russia wants to adopt a law allowing troops to be sent to countries where Russians have been arrested

The Russian government has submitted a bill to the State Duma that would allow troops to be sent to other countries to protect Russian citizens arrested or persecuted there by court decisions. The document was published on Thursday in the electronic database of the lower house of parliament, reported Deutsche Welle.

The explanatory note to the bill states that changes are planned to be made to Article 6 of the Federal Law "On Citizenship of the Russian Federation" and Article 10 of the Federal Law "On Defense."

According to the authors, it is necessary "to protect the rights of citizens of the Russian Federation in case of their arrest (detention), criminal and other persecution" based on decisions of foreign and international courts that are empowered without Russia's participation or have jurisdiction not based on an international treaty with Russia or a relevant UN Security Council resolution.

The document provides that for the protection of Russian citizens abroad, extraterritorial use of armed forces is possible by decision of the country's president. The Russian government commission for legislative activity approved the draft.
