Donald Trump said he would like to take possession of Iranian oil and does not rule out capturing Kharg Island, through which Iran exports 90% of its oil — the country's main source of income, writes BBC.
In an interview with the Financial Times on Sunday, Trump said he "would like to take the oil," comparing the potential move to the situation in Venezuela, where the US allegedly intends to control the oil industry "indefinitely" after the capture of Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro in January.
"Frankly, I'd like to take the oil from Iran, but some stupid people in the US say, 'Why are you doing that?' But they are stupid people," Trump said.
"Maybe we'll take Kharg Island, maybe not. We have many options," he added.
Donald Trump also stated on Sunday that he sees no problem with Russian oil supplies to Cuba. A tanker with Russian oil is currently approaching the island, and US authorities will allow it to reach its destination, despite the energy blockade of Cuba announced by the US.
"If any country wants to send oil to Cuba right now, I have no problem with that — whether it's Russia or anyone else," Trump said.
Cuba is experiencing its most severe economic and energy crisis since the end of the Cold War, largely due to the US fuel blockade. The island experiences almost daily power outages, and prices for medicine and food are rising.
