Arvydas Avulis believes that Lithuania should maintain a principled position regarding Belarus, but at the same time act more pragmatically and take into account economic benefits. According to him, transit can be allowed, without formally supporting Alexander Lukashenka's government and while declaring support for democratic forces.
At the same time, the businessman noted that such a step is possible only under certain conditions. He proposes using transit as a tool of pressure: if there are violations from Belarus, for example, the launch of contraband or illegal migration, then transit can be immediately stopped.
A similar idea was previously expressed by Remigijus Žemaitaitis, leader of the populist "Dawn over Nemunas" party.
At the same time, Lithuanian Prime Minister Ingrida Šimonytė stated that the possibility of dialogue with Belarus would only be considered if a number of conditions were met: an end to cross-border smuggling, the return of detained trucks without fines, and the absence of illegal migration.
President Gitanas Nausėda emphasized that relations with Belarus can only improve when it stops creating threats and is ready for normal neighborliness. He also noted that the issue of fertilizer transit is being considered at the level of the entire European Union.
