US Army Chief of Staff Randy George resigned, the Pentagon confirmed. Earlier, several American media reported that US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth demanded George's departure, writes BBC.
Official representative of the Ministry of Defense Sean Parnell wrote on X that George «will immediately retire from his position as the 41st Chief of Staff of the Army».
Typically, US Army Chiefs of Staff serve for four years. Former US President Joe Biden appointed George to the position in 2023.
The change of the Chief of Staff looks like a rather unusual step at a time when the US, together with Israel, is waging war against Iran — one of the largest military operations by the American military in recent years.
61-year-old George is a career officer and a graduate of the most prestigious American Military Academy West Point. He participated in the first Gulf War, as well as in conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan.
The reasons for his departure are not officially reported. «We are grateful for his service, but it's time to change the army's leadership,» an unnamed Pentagon official told CBS News.
Instead of George, General Christopher La Neve will temporarily hold the position of Army Chief of Staff.
According to CBS News, two other high-ranking officers were also dismissed along with George: General David Hodne, who led the Army's Training and Doctrine Command, and Major General William Green, head of the Chaplain Corps.
In the past, George was an aide to then-Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin (he held this position during Biden's presidency).
Last fall, George also traveled to Ukraine as part of an American military delegation led by Secretary of the Army Dan Driskill, which, according to reports, discussed peace talks with Russia.
After Donald Trump came to the White House, more than 10 high-ranking military officials lost their positions, including Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Charles Brown, Chief of Naval Operations Admiral Lisa Franchetti, Deputy Chief of Staff of the Air Force General Jim Slife, and Chief of Military Intelligence Jeffrey Cruz.
