After Germany's rejection of Russian oil, Kazakhstan became one of its most important alternative suppliers.

Vladimir Putin could deal a new blow to Germany's energy supply. According to insider information, Russia intends to stop the transit of Kazakh oil via the "Druzhba" oil pipeline – a key oil artery for the eastern regions of the Federal Republic of Germany – starting from May 1. Germany and Kazakhstan have already been informed of this decision, Bild writes.
Up until now, Kazakh oil has been supplied in large volumes through Russian territory to Germany – primarily to the PCK oil refinery in Schwedt (federal state of Brandenburg). From there, a significant part of the region is supplied with gasoline, diesel, and heating oil. In 2025, Germany received more than 2.1 million tons of oil via this route – 44% more than in the previous year.
After Germany's rejection of Russian oil, Kazakhstan became one of its most important alternative suppliers.
Officially, Moscow pretends not to know anything: Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated that he was unaware of plans to stop the transit of Kazakh oil: "We will try to verify this." The Russian Ministry of Energy did not react at all.
If Russia truly stops the transit, it will become a serious problem for Germany. The refinery in Schwedt is already looking for a solution. A representative of Rosneft Deutschland stated: "We must check how to ensure alternative supplies if necessary, so that PCK can continue to operate at full capacity. [...] This is not a hopeless situation."
However, one thing is clear already: if Kazakh oil stops flowing through the "Druzhba" pipeline, Germany's energy supply will become more complex and expensive.
