Putin allowed widows of fallen servicemen to enter universities for free and banned firing those who returned from the front

Putin signed three laws concerning servicemen and their families, reports "Dozhd".

One of the laws allows wives of fallen participants in the invasion of Ukraine to enroll in universities and colleges for free. The quota applies to widows of employees of the Federal Penitentiary Service and the Ministry of Internal Affairs, as well as fighters of the self-proclaimed "DPR" and "LPR".

Another law prohibits laying off employees who returned from military service after mobilization or the end of their contract. The third law allows two relatives of a Rosgvardia employee to travel for free to the place of his treatment in case of severe injury.

In August 2025, State Duma deputies proposed granting widows of participants in the invasion of Ukraine the right to free higher education. In October, the Ministry of Education and Science reported that about 600 widows had expressed such a desire.
