«Where's that Batman girl?» A Belarusian woman's encounter with a bat ended in an emergency room visit
This night turned out to be «fun» for Polina from Baranovichi — a bat flew into her apartment. The girl couldn't get rid of the unwelcome guest for a long time. Ultimately, it all ended with a trip to the emergency room. Journalists from «Onliner» contacted Polina to learn the details of her nightly adventures.

«In the next room, where my sister sleeps, the window was open for ventilation; there's no mosquito net there. But usually, we managed without such 'surprises'. And then suddenly I hear my sister scream in the middle of the night…»
When Polina entered her sister's room, she realized a bat had flown in. The girl put on gloves and tried to catch the frightened animal.
«The creature turned out to be quite large, with a wingspan slightly larger than a palm. We turned on the light, and the bat hid — it's afraid of bright light. I then put on a hood to protect my head, and over the leather glove, a thick kitchen one, and continued my attempts. But the bat dived under the sofa — I didn't even know they could not only fly but also run.»
It was already about two in the morning, the bat was alternately hiding and almost bumping into its 'rescuer'.
«I know that bats navigate space using echolocation. But when it flew close to me, I still deliberately hissed — it seemed to me that way it would better understand that I was nearby.»
The bat kept darting around and couldn't get out. At some point, it ended up in the corner of the window. Then Polina finally managed to carefully pick up the animal — and immediately got bitten.
«It bit through the glove. The sensation was as if my finger had been pricked with toothpicks. I quickly grabbed it and released it outside.»
There were almost no marks left on her finger, but the girl couldn't fall asleep after that.
«It seemed to have only touched the top layer of skin, but I knew that an emergency room visit awaited me in the morning. I lay for an hour, staring at the ceiling. I felt uneasy; I live in the Brest region, and we have an outbreak of rabies here. And bats are precisely carriers of this disease.»
In the morning, Polina went to the hospital, where she received the necessary injections and began a course of rabies vaccinations. According to the girl, her story was received with humor at the emergency room.
«Monday, 8 AM, the queue at the emergency room had about 15 people: half had dislocations and fractures, the other half had tick bites. I was the only 'star' like that. While I was waiting, the doctors were asking: «Where's that Batman girl?»
