Proposed to legally enshrine the obligation to participate in the census
The obligation to participate in the population census is proposed to be legally enshrined. This follows from the draft law on amendments to the law "On the Population Census," which was adopted today by deputies in the first reading, writes BelTA.

"The law 'On the Population Census' proposes to enshrine the right of respondents to know the purpose of the population census and the obligation to participate in it," said Inna Medvedeva, Chairman of the National Statistical Committee, presenting the draft law in the Oval Hall.
Thus, enshrining the obligation of respondents to participate in this event will allow emphasizing the necessity of participating in the population census, increasing responsibility and awareness when providing accurate primary statistical data, said Inna Medvedeva.
She also announced today that a trial census will take place in the Bobruisk district in October 2027.
Population censuses in Belarus occur every 10 years; the previous one was in October 2019. The census recorded that 9 million 413 thousand people lived in the country. According to the 2009 census, there were 9 million 503.8 thousand.
According to Belstat data, as of January 1, 2026, 9 million 46 thousand people lived in Belarus.
