Leo XIV doesn't just wear sneakers. People were particularly impressed that Pope Leo's footwear appears to be vintage. These are Nike Franchise Low — sneakers that first came out in the seventies but were re-released in 2008.
Pope Leo XIV is not the first pontiff with a love for comfortable footwear. For example, Benedict XVI appeared at an audience in 2005 wearing red slippers. Benedict's successor, Pope Francis, wore personalized Nike sneakers — white and yellow in the Vatican's colors, adorned with his personal coat of arms. They were a gift to him. The words "Pope" and "Francis" embellished the heels of the shoes. Francis was clearly pleased with the unusual gift. Usually, however, he preferred black orthopedic shoes — due to chronic knee problems.
