Lukashenka stated that Belarus saved itself during the pandemic by going its own way
“We saved ourselves by not following others who introduced full isolation and scattered money from helicopters. We could not afford either,” he said.

At the opening of a new Infectious Diseases Hospital in Minsk, Lukashenka stated that Belarus would not spare funds for providing quality medical care to the population, writes BelTA.
“You remember the so-called pandemic that we went through together. Despite the fact that we were the only state in the world that went its own way and benefited from it. We saved ourselves by not following others who introduced full isolation and scattered money from helicopters. We could not afford either,” he said. “But we drew the appropriate conclusions when we were scrambling, looking for places for infectious patients. It's good that infectious disease departments and hospitals in district centers and regions were not destroyed. But we saw that in such megacities as Minsk, we lacked precisely such a compact institution where these patients could be accommodated.”
“We learned lessons from the recent pandemic. We didn't reject anything, didn't brush anything aside. We saw our shortcomings. And we must always be ready not to allow a repetition of those mistakes and shortcomings that were once made,” Lukashenka added.
It is known that in Belarus, COVID mortality was understated by more than 4 times.
As of November 2, 2021 (the last date in the available data from the Minsk pathological anatomy bureau), the Ministry of Health stated that Belarus had a total of 604,037 registered cases of COVID-19 and 4,662 deaths of infected individuals.
Registered cases were understated by 2.23 times compared to the actual statistics obtained by "Belpol", and the registered mortality rate across the country, presumably (if the ratio of illnesses and deaths was the same in Minsk and the rest of the country), was understated by 4.26 times.
On July 5, 2022, the Ministry of Health last reported its version of COVID statistics: 994,037 registered cases of COVID-19 and 7,118 deaths of infected individuals. Compared to the actual statistics, cases were understated by 2.09 times – almost the same amount as they were understated on November 2, 2021. If one assumes that mortality was understated, as before, by 4.26 times, then it turns out that there were about 30.3 thousand registered deaths of infected individuals.
Probably, Belarus registered about 30 thousand COVID deaths during the first two and a half years of the pandemic.
As of January 25, 2023 – the last date in the disease statistics obtained by "Belpol" – 2,185,065 cases of COVID were registered in Belarus. By that day, the Ministry of Health had not published its statistics for six months, and registered COVID mortality had significantly decreased in Belarus and worldwide.
