Will there be fewer traffic jams in Minsk? An optical highway for traffic lights will be laid along the second ring road

Minsk will update its traffic management system. For this, a high-speed fiber-optic highway will be laid along the contour of the second transport ring. Information about this was published by the State Military-Industrial Committee, as reported by Office Life.

Project documentation for the new video surveillance subsystem has already passed the state construction expertise, and OJSC "AGAT - Control Systems" acted as the developer.

In essence, the new highway will become the basis for a full-fledged intelligent transport system for the capital. With its help, a computer will be able to promptly change the operating phases of traffic lights depending on the current traffic intensity. This will reduce congestion and prepare Minsk for the implementation of smart city technologies.

Work is planned to begin in 2027. The length of the new backbone network will be more than 55 kilometers.

The optical "ring" will connect traffic lights and cameras with the Central Control Point. Specifically for the project, engineers are developing a new communication protocol so that road controllers can connect directly to the center via fiber optics.

The ring architecture will provide additional system reliability: even if the cable is damaged in one place, communication will not be interrupted.
