Gaming Industry Scandal — Long-awaited GTA 6 Leaked Online Shortly Before Official Presentation

Days before the big presentation of Grand Theft Auto VI, videos from the unreleased game began appearing online. The materials are being spread under the name CyberLeek, and who is actually behind the leak is still unknown.

Grand Theft Auto VI is the continuation of one of the most successful video game series in history. The previous installment, GTA V, was released back in 2013.

The events of GTA VI take place in the fictional American state of Leonida, which is prototyped after Florida. The main city is Vice City, a local analogue of Miami, which has already appeared in previous games in the series.

There are two main characters: Jason Duval and Lucia Caminas. After a botched crime, the couple finds themselves at the center of a major criminal story and must act together. Developer Rockstar promises the most massive and detailed version of the Grand Theft Auto world in the history of the series.

GTA VI is scheduled for release on November 19, 2026, on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. On August 27, Rockstar planned to show a big online presentation of the game on Netflix. But nine days before that, an unknown individual began to spoil the company's plans.

On August 18, two videos appeared on the internet that looked like recordings of GTA VI gameplay. They were published by an unknown person or group of people under the name CyberLeek.

In the first video, Jason is near a house playing basketball. In the second, he drives around the city, crashes into cars, gets into a fight, and attracts police attention.

CyberLeek didn't stop there. On the same day, a full map of the state of Leonida appeared online.

In the following days, new videos began to appear.

By August 23, at least ten videos had appeared online. In them, Jason fights other characters, steals and drives cars, robs gas stations and stores, flees from the police, and visits a strip club. Game enthusiasts also saw a video of plane flights.

Particularly revealing was a video in which Jason shoots the word LEEK onto a wall — a reference to the name CyberLeek. This became an important indication that the leaker might not just have had a collection of pre-stolen videos, but access to a working version of the game.

Rockstar has not officially confirmed the authenticity of the published materials. However, copies of the videos began to be removed from the internet after copyright infringement complaints, which served as indirect evidence of their authenticity.

"This is not an attempt to make money"

Simultaneously with the first leaks on August 18, CyberLeek published a manifesto explaining their motives and outlining demands for the gaming industry.

The hacker opposes digital game pre-orders, paid access to content already within the game itself, and the practice where a purchased game can stop working after servers are shut down. In their opinion, single-player games should remain available offline, even if the company no longer supports their servers.

The author threatens that Rockstar may not be the last company against which such attacks will be carried out.

But there's a detail that greatly spoils the image of a fighter for players' rights. Along with the leaks, CyberLeek began actively promoting its own cryptocurrency, CYBERLEEK, on the Solana network. Its advertising and QR codes appear directly on the videos with the stolen GTA VI materials.

CyberLeek itself claims that the money is needed for some secret project and infrastructure for a future fight against gaming corporations. In the manifesto, it explicitly insists that this is "not an attempt to get rich quick."

Rockstar is looking for the source of the leak

On August 20, Take-Two Interactive, the parent company of Rockstar Games, filed a request with a federal court in New York. It wants to obtain information from Microsoft and Discord that could help identify CyberLeek.

This is not just about a name or email. Microsoft is being asked for, among other things, IP addresses from which accounts were registered and last logged in, phone numbers, data on linked accounts and OneDrive, as well as Windows device identifiers.

The request also concerns three Discord servers that may have been involved in distributing the leaks. Microsoft and Discord must provide the requested data by September 4.

An anonymous source familiar with the company's actions told Bloomberg that "all hands are on deck" at Rockstar, with management trying to ascertain the origin of the leak and find the person behind it.

Despite the scandal, Rockstar does not intend to postpone the planned gameplay presentation or urgently change GTA VI's marketing strategy.

According to the Bloomberg source, management and many Rockstar employees are angry about what happened. Particular annoyance is caused by the fact that this is already the second major GTA VI leak after the 2022 hack.

After that attack, Rockstar significantly strengthened its security measures. Developers were mandated to work in offices five days a week, and remote work was abandoned. The GTA VI team could no longer use work tools or access game versions outside the office. However, even these measures could not prevent the new leak.

Meanwhile, GTA VI itself is not yet complete, although development is already approaching its final stage. Rockstar continues to prepare the game for its planned release on November 19.
