"Alternative for Germany" wants to withdraw the country from Schengen and the Eurozone
Co-chair of the right-wing populist party "Alternative for Germany" (AfD) Alice Weidel stated that if her party comes to power, Germany could withdraw from the Eurozone and the Schengen Agreement.
The politician said in a traditional "Summer Interview" on the public television channel ZDF. Weidel sharply criticized the German government, calling its leaders "idiots" who promise one thing and do something completely different.
Weidel also spoke out against the so-called "firewall" — an agreement between Germany's main political parties not to cooperate with the AfD. She stated that she is ready to work with any political forces, while simultaneously accusing the current ruling coalition of CDU/CSU and Social Democrats of deceiving the population and destroying the country.
If the AfD comes to power, the party, according to Weidel, "will show what it's capable of." She linked Germany's entry into the Eurozone with a decline in citizens' living standards. Furthermore, as part of her anti-migration policy, Weidel threatened the country's withdrawal from the Schengen Agreement. According to her, this would allow better control of borders and close the "holes" in them.
According to the latest Allensbach poll, commissioned by the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung newspaper, the AfD is currently the most popular party in Germany. If elections to the Bundestag were held next Sunday, it could receive 27.5% of the votes. The CDU would come in second with 22.5%.
