Dozens of searches were conducted in 19 European countries in a case involving the sale of a million counterfeit smartphones

Around 160 searches were conducted in 19 European countries in a case involving the large-scale sale of counterfeit smartphones. According to data from a joint investigation by WDR, NDR, and Süddeutsche Zeitung, the alleged criminal group may have sold about a million phones through Amazon and other online platforms since 2017, passing them off as new Samsung devices, Bild writes.
Seven suspects were detained even before the mass searches began.
Investigators believe that the phones were assembled from used components purchased in Asia and Arab countries. The parts were cleaned and reassembled in workshops in Dubai and Hong Kong, after which the devices were packaged in a way that made them visually difficult to distinguish from original ones. One of the scheme's centers was a warehouse in Krefeld, where investigators found thousands of such smartphones.
According to the investigation, the network generated at least 300 million euros from sales since 2017. Furthermore, in Germany alone, the suspects may have evaded paying at least 24 million euros in taxes with the help of a network of shell companies and fictitious cross-border deliveries.
