Radosław Sikorski on Poland's relations with Belarus: We have a slight thaw
In an interview with Rzeczpospolita with Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski, the topic of a possible normalization of relations with Belarus was raised, among other things.
«We have a slight thaw because Belarus did what successive Polish governments had called for: it released Andrzej Poczobut through US mediation, and even allowed him to return and then released him again,» Sikorski said.
He added that «smuggled balloons have stopped flying recently,» and the Polish-Belarusian border is calm, although, in his opinion, this is not due to Belarus's efforts, but rather the result of Poland having spent more than a billion euros on building a barrier and an operation to protect the border.
«Some in the country believe that Poland has eternal and permanent friends and enemies, whereas foreign policy is based on us inclining other subjects of international law towards behavior that better suits our interests, and if their policy changes, then we can also change our policy,» said the head of the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
«It is in our interest that Belarus maintains its state distinctness from Russia,» he emphasized.
Sikorski noted that there is a difference between being a partner of Russia and being part of it.
He also said that for 30 years «everything has been leading to» Russia increasing its territory at the expense of Belarus.
«The question is that this should not happen,» the Polish minister noted.
