A mysterious envelope was opened in the Polish Military Gendarmerie: three hospitalized, 133 people evacuated
Two servicemen and a civilian employee experienced skin irritation after opening an envelope sent from Germany.
The incident occurred at the Military Gendarmerie unit in the city of Nowa Dęba in southeastern Poland, writes "Rzeczpospolita" with reference to RMF FM.
The envelope contained a postcard. After unfolding it, no powder or other substance was noticed, but soon two servicemen and a civilian employee experienced irritation on the skin of their face and hands. They were taken to the hospital.
Four other servicemen who might have come into contact with the package were isolated. They had no symptoms.
133 people were evacuated from an adjacent part of the building for safety reasons.
"An examination of the package ruled out the presence of chemical, biological, and radioactive substances," the Military Gendarmerie reported.
After examination, the three affected individuals were discharged from the hospital. According to a gendarmerie representative, tests did not reveal signs of poisoning.
What exactly caused the skin irritation is not yet known. The circumstances of the incident are being investigated.
