Almost no locomotives left in Ukraine after Russian strikes

Since the start of the full-scale war, Russia has damaged or destroyed over 500 Ukrainian locomotives, with more than half of them in 2026. Ukraine is now looking for replacements in European countries, but not all machines will be suitable due to the different railway track gauge.

Ukraine has almost completely exhausted its locomotive reserves, stated Agriculture Policy Minister Taras Vysotsky in a comment to the Financial Times. According to him, Kyiv is already negotiating with European countries regarding the supply of equipment.

The problem is that Ukraine uses a track gauge of 1520 millimeters, whereas in most EU countries it is narrower — 1435 millimeters. Therefore, regular European locomotives cannot be immediately placed on Ukrainian rails.

In recent weeks, Russia has intensified strikes on trains carrying grain and iron ore – two key Ukrainian export goods.

Nikita Grubov, executive director of the private port operator TIS, stated that three locomotives were lost near their terminal in the port of Pivdennyi (Southern).

“There is a big deficit now. This is our weak spot,” he said.

On September 15, Ukrainian Foreign Ministry Head Andriy Sybiha appealed to partners with a request to help find locomotives for the 1520-millimeter gauge and finance the acquisition of new ones.

“For this vital artery to continue functioning, Ukraine urgently needs replacements,” Sybiha stated.

According to him, since the start of the full-scale invasion, Russian attacks have damaged or destroyed over 500 locomotives. More than half of these losses occurred in 2026.
