Apostolic Nuncio Claudio Gugerotti met with Paviel Sieviaryniec in prison and passed greetings to other political prisoners through him.
The news gives hope for Catholic church becoming the mediator between the political prisoners and Belarus’ authorities which might result into the release of the political prisoners.
“As a symbol of the respect for universal authority of the Holy Father and humanitarian efforts by the Holy See, the Pope representative in Minsk archbishop Claudio Gugerotti was allowed to meet with several Belarusian prisoners. They are Kavalienka, Syramolatau, Statkievich, Bialiacki, Dashkievich, Lobau and Sieviaryniec. Apostolic Nuncio met with every of these prisoners in jails, learned about their condition and listened to them. He passed the prayers of the Holy Father for them and their families,” Vatican Radio reported.
As reported previously, political prisoners Siarhiej Kavalienka and Paviel Syramolatau were released the other day. They were both among the persons visited by Apostolic Nuncio.
However, there still are 12 political prisoners in Belarus’ jails. Some other people were given suspended sentences or are on probation terms after release.
Pope Benedict XVI met with Aliaksandr Lukashenka in 2009 in Vatican. It was Belarus’ President first foreign visit after being long ignored by European community for human rights and moral norms violations.
“It exceeds my power to comment on the statement by Vatican Radio, and Nuncio is currently absent from the country,” a representative of Apostolic Nunciate told Nasha Niva.
