Bisons' favorite treat named in hunting estate — it's given all year round
Winter feeding of bisons has started in Belarusian hunting estates, along with a count of these animals.

Hunters at the «Aziory» hunting estate in Hrodna District face a challenge, as it is home to one of the largest herds in the country — 509 individuals (the third largest in Belarus), reports TRK Hrodna.
For such a large number of bisons, 50 tons of hay, 100 tons of beets, and 50 tons of apples are prepared for winter. Cereals are also on the menu.
The bisons' food must be nutritious and full of vitamins. If necessary, mineral complexes and even medicines can be added to the animals' diet.
Food distribution begins in August, said Stanislav Basko, chief specialist of the hunting and fishing farm of the SEC «Aziory Hrodna District».
But there is one treat that bisons are given all year round. Even the most cautious individuals come to the feeders for it. This is Belarusian salt.
When the animals come to feed, hunting estate staff observe them carefully.
If this cannot be done during the day, thermal imagers come to help at night.
The main task is to count how many bisons are in the herd, to record the number of young — over 50 bison calves were born during the year.
As the herd grows, specialists form groups to resettle part of it to other regions. It has already been decided to send 10 individuals to Lahojsk District. Animals will also be relocated to the Homiel regional hunting estate. This approach helps preserve the population of bisons, which are listed in the Red Book.
