Vince Zampella, Developer of Call of Duty and Battlefield 6 Video Games, Dies

Video game developer Vince Zampella, whose studios created some of the world's best-selling games, died Sunday afternoon in a Ferrari crash on Angeles Crest Highway in Southern California, writes NBC4.

The accident occurred around 12:45 PM on a scenic road north of Los Angeles, in the San Gabriel Mountains. According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), the Ferrari veered off the road immediately after exiting a tunnel, crashed into a concrete barrier, and one of the passengers was ejected from the vehicle.

The driver, Zampella, was trapped in the car, which caught fire after the impact. He died at the scene, and the passenger died at the hospital.

Details of what led to the accident on the winding forest road are also currently unknown.

Zampella, who was 55, co-founded Respawn Entertainment. In 2017, the studio was acquired by video game industry giant EA. Respawn Entertainment is best known for its games "Titanfall", "Titanfall 2", "Apex Legends", and "STAR WARS Jedi: Fallen Order".

"He really knew how to create stories, things that touch the very essence of human feelings — be it fear, anxiety, or heroism," said Washington Post video game critic Gene Park, who was familiar with Zampella. — "I think he managed to embody this through the design of the video games he created.

He was a very, very humble person. He was well aware of the impact he had on people and never took it for granted."

Zampella also led EA's studio team in Playa Vista, which worked on the Battlefield video game franchise.

In a statement, EA called Zampella's influence on the world of video games "profound and far-reaching."

"This is an unimaginable loss, and our hearts are with Vince's family, his loved ones, and everyone touched by his work," EA said in a statement. — "Vince's impact on the video game industry was profound and widespread. A friend, colleague, leader, and visionary creator, his work helped shape modern interactive entertainment and inspired millions of players and developers worldwide. His legacy will continue to define how games are created and how players interact with them for generations to come."
