Airspace Closed Over All of Greece Due to Communication Problems
On January 4, Greece experienced serious technical problems with aviation communications, resulting in the entire country's airspace being closed to flights. Due to malfunctions in radio frequencies that provide communication between aircraft and air traffic control centers, an order was issued not to operate flights over Greece, reports Euronews.

Initially, international flights already approaching airports landed safely, but by noon, all aircraft heading to Greek airports were instructed to divert to other countries, most often to Turkey. Greece's airspace was empty, while Turkish skies were overloaded.
Since 9:30 AM, only two of about 50 scheduled flights from "Eleftherios Venizelos" airport were able to take off. All Greek airports, both on the mainland and the islands, faced delays and flight cancellations.
Civil aviation specialists and technical services are working to resolve the problem, as radio frequency bandwidth has significantly decreased, and communication with control towers is virtually non-existent.
