Dozens of people cross the checkpoint on the Belarusian-Ukrainian border in the Malaryta district daily
According to information from The Economist, the Makrany-Damanava road checkpoint on the border between Belarus and Ukraine has become a very important route for Ukrainians returning home. Officially, this crossing in the Malaryta district of the Brest region is considered closed, however, since the first weeks of the war, it has effectively been used as a humanitarian corridor.

Through this checkpoint, people from Donbas and other territories not currently controlled by Kyiv travel to Ukraine. It is difficult for them to reach it: the path lies through Russia and Belarus and can take about three days, though previously it was possible to get from Donbas to Kyiv in just a few hours. Those who do not have valid Ukrainian documents must obtain temporary papers at the Ukrainian consulate in Minsk before crossing the border.
Approximately 30-40 people cross the border daily. Most often these are women, children, and elderly people, but men of conscription age are also encountered, despite the risk of mobilization.
On the Ukrainian side, refugees are met by volunteers. After verification, they are given food, new SIM cards, and financial assistance — about 10.8 thousand hryvnias. People are then transported by minibuses to trains, buses, hospitals, or relatives.
