European Commission Asks Ukraine to Repair Druzhba Oil Pipeline Faster
The European Commission has appealed to Ukraine with a request to accelerate the repair of the Druzhba oil pipeline, which was severely damaged on January 27 as a result of a Russian attack. The damage to the pipeline caused tension, as Hungary, in response, blocked the allocation of a €90 billion loan to Ukraine and a new package of sanctions against Russia, writes Euronews.

While "Druzhba" is not operational, the Croatian "Adria" oil pipeline is named as the most realistic alternative for oil supplies to Hungary and Slovakia. Its operator stated that its capacities are sufficient to cover the annual needs of both countries. Brussels also confirmed that non-Russian oil is already being transported via this route.
Both countries have already used part of their emergency reserves, which according to EU rules must cover a minimum of 90 days of imports. The European Commission emphasizes that there is currently no direct threat to the EU's energy security.
At the same time, Budapest and Bratislava insist on their right to receive cheaper Russian oil through "Druzhba," as they have an exemption from sanctions. Hungary accused Ukraine of "blackmail" and announced a double veto. Prime Minister Viktor Orbán even announced the deployment of troops to protect oil infrastructure and the creation of a drone-forbidden zone near the border with Ukraine.
During yesterday's visit to Kyiv, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen called for an acceleration of pipeline repairs. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy replied that repairs are complicated by constant shelling and danger to people. Ukraine states that it is carrying out restoration work but does not specify concrete deadlines for their completion.
The dispute surrounding "Druzhba" complicates the situation for Brussels: on the one hand, it needs to guarantee the energy security of EU countries, and on the other hand, to allocate the agreed loan to Ukraine as soon as possible. Kyiv needs new funds already in April.
