FIFA Considers Relocating World Cup Matches from Mexico

FIFA is considering relocating the intercontinental play-off matches, which are scheduled to take place in Mexico and will determine the teams that qualify for the 2026 World Cup.

Matches for the final stage of the tournament, scheduled from June 11 to July 19 in the USA, Mexico, and Canada, are also at risk, The Athletic reports.

Relocating matches will only be considered as a last resort if security officials and commercial partners express serious concerns.

Unrest continues in Mexico, triggered by the killing of drug cartel leader Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes. Militants are resisting law enforcement, leading to riots and shootouts.

The situation is complicated by the fact that tens of thousands of fans have already purchased tickets and booked hotels for the final stage of the tournament. In case of relocation, FIFA will be obliged to compensate fans for losses.

Mexico is scheduled to host 12 World Cup matches, which will be played in Mexico City, Monterrey, and Samapane near Guadalajara in Jalisco state, where the unrest is occurring.

And from March 26 to 31, intercontinental play-off matches will take place in Guadalajara and Monterrey, featuring the national teams of New Caledonia, Jamaica, DR Congo, Bolivia, Suriname, and Iraq.
