US First Lady Melania Trump will chair a UN Security Council meeting for the first time in the history of the UN on Monday, The Guardian reports, citing the White House.
This coincides with the beginning of the US's month-long presidency of the UN.
Melania Trump plans to focus on education as a tool for fostering tolerance and promoting global peace within this international organization, whose headquarters are located in New York.
The meeting, titled "Children, Technology and Education in Conflict," will mark the first time a First Lady of a sitting US president will preside over a meeting of the 15-member council and open the first session dedicated to the US's latest term as president.
"Mrs. Trump's leadership will mark the first time a US First Lady will chair a Security Council meeting where members will address issues of education, technology, peace, and security," the White House reported.
The Guardian writes that this move comes amidst Donald Trump's hostile stance towards the UN. He often called the organization ineffective and called for drastic changes, and also withdrew the US from several UN-affiliated agencies, including the World Health Organization and the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, a fundamental international treaty to combat the climate crisis.
In addition, the Trump administration cut funding for UN agencies working with Palestinian refugees, calling it an "undeniably failed operation."
