IRGC confirmed the death of the leader of the Basij paramilitary militia
Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) confirmed the death of Major General Gholamreza Soleimani, leader of the Basij paramilitary militia. Earlier, his elimination was reported by the Israel Defense Forces.

The IRGC statement said that Basij members will not leave the death of their leader unavenged and warned those responsible for his killing. Thus, the Iranian side effectively acknowledged the information about his death.
On the morning of March 17, Israeli military forces stated that Soleimani had been eliminated. They identified him as the head of Basij and accused him of directing repressive operations inside Iran, including the suppression of protests and mass arrests. According to the Israeli side, he had held this position for about six years.
The Basij is a paramilitary volunteer militia that is part of the IRGC structure. It was created after the 1979 Islamic Revolution and is used by Iranian authorities to maintain internal control, including suppressing protests and enforcing religious rules.
