European Parliament President Roberta Metsola issued a statement in support of Belarusians ahead of the March 25 session. A group of MEPs also issued a joint statement on this occasion.

Roberta Metsola noted in her statement that this date holds special significance for Belarus as a symbol of the struggle for freedom and democracy.
"Today we mark the International Day of Solidarity with Belarus, known as Freedom Day. On this day in 1918, Belarus declared independence. For millions of Belarusians, this anniversary has become a powerful symbol of protest against the oppressive dictatorship. And we take this opportunity to reaffirm our support for all Belarusians who are fighting for a free and democratic country."

The authors of the statement from the MEPs emphasized that Freedom Day is not only a historical date but also a symbol of Belarusians' aspiration for freedom, dignity, and self-determination. Today, it acquires special significance as a sign of resistance amidst ongoing repression following the falsified 2020 elections.
The statement notes that, despite the release of some political prisoners, about 900 people remain behind bars, and repression continues. Particular concern is raised by the pressure on civil society and Belarusian culture.
MEPs emphasize that Belarus's sovereignty is under threat amidst increasing dependence on Russia and call for its protection. They reaffirm support for the democratic forces of Belarus and the right of Belarusians to independently determine their future.
The authors of the statement expressed solidarity with Belarusians worldwide and emphasized that Europe will continue to support Belarus's path to freedom, democracy, and return to the European family.
