Israel's parliament has passed a law introducing the death penalty for individuals convicted of terrorist attacks resulting in fatalities. 62 deputies voted for the document, 48 against, reports The Guardian.

According to the new law, the death penalty can become the main measure for Palestinians convicted of such crimes. Moreover, the verdict can be issued without a unanimous decision of the judges, and the execution of the sentence must take place within 90 days.
The initiative was actively promoted by right-wing political forces, including Minister of National Security Itamar Ben-Gvir. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also supported the law.
The norm primarily applies to Palestinians who are tried by military courts in the West Bank. At the same time, Israeli citizens in similar cases can receive an alternative punishment – life imprisonment.
The law has drawn criticism from human rights organizations and international bodies, who consider it discriminatory and warn of possible violations of international law. In their opinion, this could lead to increased tensions and a new escalation of the conflict.
Supporters of the law, however, argue that harsher punishment should deter crimes.
It should be noted that in modern Israeli history, the death penalty has been used very rarely — most recently in 1962, when Nazi criminal Adolf Eichmann was executed. However, the adopted law can still be appealed in the country's Supreme Court.
