According to reports, masked officers entered the publication's office in the city center and began investigative actions. Lawyers were not allowed inside, and some employees lost communication. It also became known that Oleg Raldugin, one of the publication's columnists who investigated the entourage of Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov and the creation of the Max messenger, was detained.

Law enforcement agencies stated that they are checking the newspaper's activities and possible connections with other organizations and resources. According to the investigation, personal data of citizens obtained from various sources might have been used in the materials.

"Novaya Gazeta" itself has been operating in Russia since the 1990s, but after the start of the war in Ukraine, part of the editorial staff left the country and created a separate project. The other part of the team remained in Moscow, continuing to work under difficult conditions.

Previously, restrictive measures had already been taken against the newspaper: its registration was annulled, and some related projects were recognized as "undesirable."

During the latest events, editorial staff and their lawyers reported that they did not have access to the detained Oleg Raldugin and could not obtain full information about the situation. The editorial office itself has not yet provided extensive comments.

Dmitry Muratov, the former editor-in-chief of the publication, became a Nobel Peace Prize laureate in 2021.
